PageRank Checker

Enter a single domain, press a button, and see its Google PageRank — that was the promise of the classic PageRank checker, and it was the most-used feature this site ever offered. This guide explains how those checkers worked, why they no longer can, and what genuinely tells you about a page's standing today.

This is not a live tool. Public PageRank data was frozen in 2013 and removed by Google in 2016. There is no honest way to display a current PageRank number, so we don't. Read on for what actually works instead.

How a PageRank checker worked

The old checkers were clever but simple. When Google released its browser Toolbar, the toolbar had to ask a Google server, "what's the PageRank of the page the user is looking at?" A PageRank checker website simply made that same request on your behalf. You typed in a URL, the checker queried the same Toolbar data endpoint Google used, and it read back the 0-to-10 value. Nothing about it was magic — it was a friendly front end on a number Google already published.

Why they stopped working

Because every checker depended on that one Google data feed, they all died the moment Google switched it off. When the Toolbar PageRank endpoint went dark in 2016, there was simply no source of truth left to query. That is the key thing to understand about any PageRank checker you find online now: it cannot be reading a real, current value, because no such value is published anywhere. At best it is echoing the frozen 2013 figure; at worst it is inventing a plausible-looking number to keep you on the page. Neither reflects reality.

What to check instead

The good news is that the questions people brought to a PageRank checker — "is this a strong page? should I trust it? is a link from here worth having?" — can still be answered, just with better data. To size up a single page or domain today, look at:

  • Referring domains — how many distinct websites link to it. One hundred links from one site mean far less than links from one hundred different sites.
  • The quality of those linking sites — a handful of links from respected, topical publications beats thousands from link farms.
  • Third-party authority scores — estimates such as Domain Rating, Domain Authority, or Trust Flow that try to approximate what PageRank once signalled. These are covered, vendor-neutrally, in what replaced PageRank.
  • Relevance and content quality — whether the page actually covers the topic well, which no single number ever captured.

What the numbers actually meant

Part of what made the checker addictive was how little the raw 0-to-10 figure explained. Because the scale was logarithmic, the gap between each step widened dramatically as you climbed: a jump from 3 to 4 was modest, while 6 to 7 represented an enormous difference in linking. That is why so many sites plateaued at 4 or 5 and stayed there for years. It also meant the number was a blunt instrument — two very different sites could both show "PR4" while having wildly different real-world authority. A single coarse digit was never going to capture something as layered as a website's standing, which is precisely why richer, multi-signal analysis eventually replaced it.

A healthier way to think about it

Chasing a single site-wide number was always a trap, even when PageRank was live. Search engines rank individual pages for individual queries using many signals at once. A better habit is to ask focused questions: Does this page earn links from places my audience trusts? Does it answer the query better than the competition? Is it technically sound and easy to crawl?
