Search & Authority

Website Authority in AI Search

Google's generative AI features draw on its core Search ranking and quality systems.

Core ranking systems and AI search

Google's ranking systems guide describes systems that work at page level, using a range of signals to rank individual pages. Signals and classifiers covering a whole site also contribute to Google's understanding of those pages.

Google explicitly says good site-wide signals do not mean all of a site's content will always rank highly. Poor site-wide signals do not mean every page will rank poorly either.

Google describes systems that examine how pages link to one another to understand their subject and which pages might help with a query. PageRank is among those systems. Its operation has evolved, and Google says it remains within the core ranking systems. PageRank was one of Google's core ranking systems when Google first launched.

Google's generative AI guidance names AI Overviews and AI Mode as examples of these features. It also says no third-party tool has access to Google's internal ranking or AI systems.

Indexed pages, snippets and eligibility

An indexed page is part of a search engine's collection of pages. A snippet is the short description accompanying a search result.

Google's generative AI guidance says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet, fulfilling the technical requirements for Search.

In addition to the technical requirements for Search, Google says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to qualify for display in those features.

Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed.

No special schema required

Structured data describes information in a format that software can interpret.

Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search. It also says there is no special schema.org markup that needs to be added.

What AI impression reports record

Google announced Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026. A note dated August 31, 2026 says the insights had reached all websites worldwide.

The reports provide dedicated views of impressions within features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, as well as generative AI features in Discover. Google defines impressions here as how often URLs from a site appeared in those features. An impression does not establish that someone visited the page or assign the page an authority score.

The Pages view identifies which URLs appeared within AI features.

Google says this data is also included in the overall performance report, where it continues to contribute to an overview of the site's visibility in Google Search.
